25 JUL - 2008

1) Jeremy a Saint...No Shockey there

It was a likely destination around draft day, and even though it didn't get done in April, finally Jeremy Shockey will be Drew Brees new weapon in New Orleans after a trade with the Giants. If Shockey can stay healthy and bond with coach Sean Payton, then the Saints offense gets more explosive. The Giants do well to part with an irritated player who wasn't a factor in their Superbowl run and get a good pick in the draft.

2) Taylor wearing new Skins

Jason Taylor's dance in Miami is over. The perennial Pro Bowler takes his game to Washington this season after finally parting ways with the Dolphins. The Dolphins get draft picks and headline relief and Taylor will don 55 in DC as one of the 'missing pieces' in the Redskins playoff aspirations.

3) Manning Knees Cause Concern

He will miss the start of training camp and the Colts should be worried. Even though the bursa sac surgery conducted on QB Peyton Manning is not expected to see the Colts without their leader come the season opener, the thin ranks behind him may also impact their training camp development. Is Jim Sorgi really the guy to fill his shoes? Look for the Colts to seriously look at grooming the heir apparent from next year's draft.

17 JUL - 2008

1) Wow, I am STILL over it

The Favre stuff is continuing, and now it is a he-said-she said type of thing. The Packers have already filed a grievance against the Vikings for 'tampering' with Favre. When will it end? Favre and his agent haven't yet applied for reinstatement, so who knows. One thing is for sure, I wish something would happen so we can all move on/

2) Speaking of Moving On

RB Kevin Jones finally has a home - Chicago. After cutting Cedric Benson and handing over the keys to rookie Matt Forte, the Bears needed some veteran depth, and a one-year deal for Jones provides that. I would assume the Bears medical staff passed his troublesome knee. With their own QB questions, this is a sensible move.

3) Another Jones with a Change of Location

This could be Jacksonville WR Matt Jones, although his location might be jail after being caught with cocaine in his possession in his car. Jones had already fallen to #5 on the Jags depth chart after being a former first round pick, so he was on thin ice (I will ignore the potentially crude puns here) already. Now the NFL may well suspend him and the Jags would be entitled to move on without the inconsistent receiver.

10 July - 2008

1) I'm Over It

Talk about Brett Favre coming out of retirement is old already, just like him. Stay retired dude, don't mess up your legacy. We all remember the Emmitt in Arizona and Montana in KC blots. The Packers need to move on, and if they don't want him, nobody wants to see him in any other colour uniform.

2) Season Preview - Breakout Players

Look for D'Angelo Williams in Carolina and Matt Forte in Chicago to have breakout season. Williams will become the #1 back in Carolina after the exit of DeSgaun Foster, and splitting some carries with Jonathon Stewart can only help. Forte is the man in Chicago, and he will get a pile of carries. At WR, look for Sidney Rice in Minnesota, Dwayne Bowe in KC and James Hardy in Buffalo to have big years. All will benefit from improved QB play this year, and Hardy, although a rookie, will benefit from having Lee Evans opposite, Marshawn Lynch in the backfield and Roscoe Parrish in the slot. Defensively, Daryl Smith in Jacksonville, Ernie Sims in Detroit and Kamerion Wimbley in Cleveland look ready to join the position's elite.

3) Training Camps Coming

Hard workouts, depth chart sorting and crucial injuries...that is what I am expecting from Training Camp!

4 July - 2008

1) Rookie Cap

I don't know how it would work, but I definitely am in favour of it. Perhaps a system where the higher the player is picked in the first round affects value, and then after the first, maybe all others in a round are grouped by position or as a whole. To many unions to make this work too easily!

2) Training Camps Ahead - Key Battles

QB position battles always are focus areas. Look for the battle in Miami, Baltimore, Chicago and New York Jets to be very interesting. I am typing Chad Henne, Troy Smith and Grossman and Kellen Clemens in that battle. Three teams with interesting WR battles are Jacksonville, Giants and the New Orleans Saints. The Jags brought in Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson and have last year's rookie Mike Walker coming back from knee surgery. My tip is for former #1 pick and project WR Matt Jones to be cut. In New York, apart from Burress and Toomer, there are a host of youngsters - Steve Smith, Mario Manningham, DJ Hall as well as Superbowl hero David Tyree fighting for spots. And the addition of Adrian Arrington in New Orleans appears to be another 7th round gem for the Saints, with his introduction making life hard for Devery Henderson and Terrence Copper. The RB depth chart in Oakland also should provide some interesting matchups.

3) Season Preview 1 - Surprise Teams

Look for Buffalo to emerge this season as a genuine playoff contender. With Trent Edwards in his second season, and a couple of additions on defense, this team has a chance, especially in a relatively weak (besides the Pats) AFC east. Don't be surprised to see Detroit emerge this year in the NFC north either, with an improved OLine and some defensive changes.
