It's been a couple of weeks, and just like the football season, we're back.
1) College Season Underway
Virginia Tech getting knocked off by ECU is a result qualifying as a surprise, along with the domination of Alabama over Clemson. The injury to Chris Wells in OSU's win over Youngstown State could be telling. No upset this time for App. State. Florida didn't need Harvin to rack up 50points. Michigan have their teething problems.
2) NFL Cuts, season awaits
Not too many surprises in the cuts, but the Bengals have been the most noted with the release of vets Rudi Johnson and Willie Anderson. In Jacksonville, Matt Jones and Troy WIlliamson have both survived for now. Formerly touted draft pick Andre' Woodson couldn't survive the Giants cuts, and will likely find a place on a practice squad somewhere, perhaps in New Orleans. Veteran Brooks Bollinger was cut in favour of rookie JD Booty in Minnesota. Look for the scramble for late pickups now. A few QB's have hit the market with Bollinger joined by Quinn Gray, Joey Harrington and Chris Simms. Simms would have to be keenly sought after, I wouldn't be surprised to see Chicago or Green Bay enter the stakes for him, or even Indy.
3) QB Issues for Opening Day
Kurt Warner has been named the starter in Arizona, not a good sign for the future. No word on the Ravens who have a 3-way battle. Pennington will hold off Henne in Miami for a little bit. Orton has been tabbed in front of Grossman in CHicago, neither look like a great option. Tavaris Jackson had better be it in Minnesota. The Pack need a veteran behind ROdgers and either rookie Brohm or Flynn. Who will be Peyton's backup in Indy?

QB Day...
1) Favre Stays in Green...but not with the Pack
Finally the Brett Favre saga is over, as he is suiting up for the NY Jets following a trade on Thursday. A conditional draft pick was the final step in ending the Favre era in cheesetown, and seeing the Jets with a new signal-caller. It will be interesting to see how these two teams' fortunes go.
2) Pennington to Parcells
No sooner had Favre become a Jet, than Pennington was gone. Pennington was the expendable veteran and now he has a new home - Miami, rejoining Bill Parcells who drafted him in NY. Nervous times ahead now for some Dolphins QBs, particularly Luke McCown. With Parcells liking rookie Chad Henne, McCown might be on the out. Second year man John Beck might be the preferred exodus, but as a 2nd rounder last year, it is hard to see them get rid of him this soon.
3) Pittsburgh in Need
The Steelers are in the market for a veteran backup after Charlie Batch broke his collarbone in their preseason opener. Behind Ben Roethlisberger now is very thin options and the Steelers must find an alternative. Look for one of the QBs in Tampa, or perhaps McCown if he is gone in Miami to provide options. Maybe even Brooks Bollinger in Minnesota or Byron Leftwich could be a candidate. The Steelers may be forced to trade for someone, JP Losman in Buffalo could be a candidate. Sooner or later, they need someone.

1) Favre Back in the Pack?
He will return to Packers camp this week after being reinstated, but who knows what it really means. A statement from Packers CEO Murphy suggested that Favre would be welcomed back and that the Packers would "use it to their advantage". Nobody is quite sure what that means, but my thought is trade value seems like an advantage.
2) Pre-Season Underway
The Redskins gave new coach Jim Zorn a winning debut with a victory over the Colts in the Hall of Fame game. The Redskins QB's showed off the value of Zorn's QB expertise completing all but 2 of their passes, including rookie Colt Brennan who also threw for 2 TDs. For the Colts, no Harrison, no Manning, but some solid performances, including from rookie RB Mike Hart and recently acquired QB Quinn Gray, both regular topics in this blog.
3) Walker Almost Quit
That is the word out of Oakland as the precious Javon Walker wasn't happy with how he was being treated. Walker signed a big money deal with the Raiders, but has clashed with coaches, reportedly considering retiring until Al Davis convinced him to stay. No idea the truth to the rumours, but Walker was a sook in Green Bay and in Denver, so no surprises.
