Round 1 Mock Draft

1. Detroit – Matthew Stafford, QB, UGA

I think Curry is a better player, but a team coming from the bottom up needs someone to become the face, even if Culpepper is the man to start this season. If they were guaranteed to get the #1 pick next year I would take Curry now and Bradford next year, but…

2. St Louis – Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest

The complete player brings some much needed athleticism and playmaking on defense.

3. Kansas City – Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB, Texas

The Chiefs need some playmakers on defense and Orakpo is a specimen. I also think if Crabtree was 100% he might be a shot.

4. Seattle - Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

Smith or Monroe are the top two tackles, but Smith’s athleticism gets him the nod to help be the future beyond Walter Jones.

5. Cleveland Browns – Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia

The Browns take whoever the Seahawks don’t to sure up their protection.

6. Cincinnati – Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech

The best WR will immediately fill Housh’s spot opposite Ocho Cinco/

7. Oakland – BJ Raji, DT, Boston College

The WR debate is on, but perhaps history shows Al Davis drafts big guys. They signed Khalif Barnes to handle the OL, now they take the DT to fill the gaping holes up front.

8. Jacksonville – Andre Smith, OT, Alabama

The Jags will have seen some good things about his Pro Day and likely schedule him for a private workout. BJ Raji is still a chance, but the Jags front office are now stating a clear desire to still draft O Line even with Tra Thomas.

9. Green Bay – Everette Brown, DE/OLB, FSU

The ideal player for the outside backer in the Packers 3-4 they are installing.

10. San Francisco – Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss

QB is going to be a popular pick, but the Niners are probably wary of a first round QB pick so soon after Alex Smith. Here they get someone to play RT opposite Joe Staley.

11. Buffalo – Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State

The run on quality tackles has left the Bills looking defensive, so an end opposite Schobel is here to add the needed pass rush for Dick Jauron.

12. Denver Broncos – Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU

If they get the right offer from Tampa maybe they take Sanchez here, but for now, with Cutler at QB, they add a 3-4 DE to fit their system and a good value pick also.

13. Washington – Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee

With Haynesworth on the inside and Jason Taylor gone, here is a fine pass rusher to spark the Redskins.

14. New Orleans Saints – Malcolm Jenkins, DB, Ohio State

Is her a CB or Safety? Who cares, the Saints need both and Jenkins is a great player.

15. Houston - Beanie Wells, RB, Ohio State

Back to Back buckeyes. The first RB taken is Wells who fits the zone scheme in Houston better than Moreno and is a great complement to Slaton.

16. San Diego – Brian Cushing, LB, USC

The shortage of LBs helps Cushing climb a bit higher than anticipated and with LT resigned, they can put off his replacement for another year.

17. New York Jets – Percy Harvin, WR, Florida

Sanchez could be very tempting here, but the Jets need speed outside and Harvin is electric.

18. Chicago – Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri

CB help is needed, but how about someone to get downfield for whoever is the QB. Maclin offers good value here as well and can take the pressure of Hester.

19. Tampa Bay – Mark Sanchez, QB, USC

Tampa could be tempted to trade up to secure Sanchez if he gets past the 49ers, but here they get him anyway to start the Raheem Morris era.

20. Detroit – Eben Britton, OT, Arizona

Time to give Stafford some more protection. Britton is the fifth OT taken this round.

21. Philadelphia – Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia

Westbrook needs a running mate and with Buckhalter gone, Moreno fits the bill. The Eagles become even more dangerous now.

22. Minnesota – Alex Mackr, OL, California

Matt Birk is gone, so young depth up front is needed, even if a bit of a reach.

23. New England – Clay Matthews, LB, USC

Matthews is a good fit for the 3-4 and is a Belichick type of player, a possible replacement instantly for Vrabel.

24. Atlanta – Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State

They need to give Matt Ryan a viable TE who can also open lanes for Michael Turner. Pettigrew is perfect for this.

25. Miami – Rey Maualuga, LB, USC

That is 3 USC LB gone in the 1st. The Dolphins look to solidify the middle in the 3-4 alongside CHanning Crowder.

26. Baltimore Ravens – DJ Moore, CB, Vanderbilt

Samari Rolle is gone, Chris McCallister is aging. Time for some youth at CB.

27. Indianapolis – Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss

The Colts need to fix their inside run defense and the big guy from the Rebels is the man. A WR like Nicks would be a strong possibility also.

28. Philadelphia – Hakeem Nicks, WR, UNC

Nicks is possibly the most polished WR in the draft and an immediate upgrade to their corps.

29. New York Giants – Darius Hayward-Bey, WR, Maryland

We saw how they struggled without Plaxico, so now they need a big athletic target along with their little hands guys and Hayward-Bey is the deep threat.

30. Tennessee – Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee

The home state product gives the Titans some edge rush. If one of the top wideouts remains, it will be a tough decision.

31. Arizona – Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut

The Cards need someone to run with Hightower, so Brown offers versatility in the run game and catching passes.

32. Pittsburgh – Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest

Two Wake players in Round 1??? What is happening here? The Steelers need CB help after the departure of McFadden and Smith is next in line. Possibly also Darius Butler.
