Second Day Notes

- A kicker is 'Mr Irrelevant'. South Carolina's Ryan Succop completed the draft by being drafted to Kansas City.

- Teams are much better at scouting the smaller schools. No more is it that the big schools dominate proceedings, with numerous lesser-known players being drafted ahead of the name player, much to the chagrin of the fans.

- Cornerbacks abound. It seems more cornerbacks than any other position rolled off the production line this weekend. 39 cornerbacks in all were drafted. There were some big names to be had on day 2 - DJ Moore to the Bears in Round 5 (after being a first-round consideration), Victor 'Macho' Harris from Va Tech to the Eagles, Cary Harris (USC) and Mike Mickens (Cincinatti) coming off very late.

- A great college runner means little in the draft process. James Davis and Javon Ringer had standout collegiate careers, but both had to wait till the 5th round to be called. One of the Big Ten's best - PJ Hill, went undrafted. If nothing else, this is a great warning to all underclassmen.

- Little love for the QBs. Not many starting hopefuls among the Day 2 selections. The absence of John Parker Wilson the real surprise.

- How about the Patriots drafting a long-snapper. Jake Ingram from Hawaii was the standout long-snapper in the collegiate ranks and this skill has earnt him a draft-spot and healthy paycheck. Not sure how many LS specialists have come before.

- Squandering picks. It seems too many teams gave up to much to move up to draft a player noone else was targeting. The New Orleans Saints stood out as guilty of this with punter Thomas Morstead. Jacksonville also did this to take small school CB Derek Cox in Round 3.

- Speaking of specialists...Louie Sakoda was a Groza award winner and an All-American in consecutive years - one year as kicker, one as punter. But he wasn't drafted. Perhaps a jack of all trades and master of none?

McGee QB #4

Stephen McGee from Texas A & M learnt from former Packers guru Mike Sherman last season and that will have prepared him for life in the NFL. Dallas nab him at the top of the fourth round in a solid pickup. As a home state guy, the Cowboys would have seen plenty of him.

Here come the TEs

Coffman was a good addition for Cincy and the Giants come back to get another good player to add to their strong draft class. TE was a need area and they hit it well.

Chicago finally get some WR help

Juaquin Iglesias is the weapon of choice for the Bears who needed a contributor at WR for Jay Cutler. Iglesias was productive and could even be a better pro than college player.

Jaguars making me eat my words

Yesterday I mocked Oakland for picking a safety in the second round who wasn't in the top 100 DBs. Now my beloved Jacksonville have returned the favour by using its 2009 third and 2010 second for a small school CB Derek Cox who wasn't listed by Scouts Inc in their top 48 CBs. Surely the Jags could have waited until their 4th Round pick??

Another DB down

Ryan Mouton from Hawaii is the latest. Having watched an awful lot of Hawaii film this year, Mouton was their shining light and a real athlete. The Titans should be very pleased with this pick.

DJ Moore must be shellshocked

At one point he was a first-rounder. Now he could be the 15th CB taken. Even with the run on corners, he hasn't appeared. Size matters y'all.

Best Draftee name

Lardarius Webb the CB from Nicholls St. Drafted by the Ravens in the third with the great name. What were his parents thinking. If he was an OL then his nickname would already be Lardass

My favourite pick of the draft on Day 2

So far, it now is with Miami who used their late 3rd round for USC WR Patrick Turner. Turner has great size and good skills and should compete for the #2 spot instantly. Parcells is shrewd and I am sure he spoke to Pete Carroll about this guy.

SEC Standout to Minnesota

Asher Allen was one of the best corners in the SEC and now he trades his Southern heat for the cold of Minneapolis. Allen should have a chance to work the nickel behind Winfield and Griffin.

Make it 4 in a row

Ramses Barden of Cal Poly is headed to New York and all of a sudden there is a huge surge on WR.

In looking to replace Burress, the Giants have drafted Hakeem Nicks and Barden. Add these two to the likes of Steve Smith and Mario Manningham and you have a very young group vying for roster spots!

WR for Pitt and the Pats

First it was Brandon Tate, the WR from UNC who was also named in the positive drug test announced with Percy Harvin, to the Patriots, and then the underrated Mike Wallace goes to Pittsburgh. That is 3 WR in a row!

Lions waste little time

Detroit took all of 10 seconds on the clock in the third to make WR Derrick Williams of Penn State their pick. He will offer return game help and work into the WR rotation nicely as a rookie.

Small Schools Emerge

It seems that the world of scouting has become such a refined prospect that no school is off the radar. I am sure we will see more unknowns appear.

A big school that just got its second player of the round drafted is Alabama, with standout center Antoine Caldwell off to Houston. Look for a third 'Bama player - safety Rashad Johnson - to come off soon.

Niners on the Clock...eyeing a QB?

It would be a good spot for a 2nd tier guy to go. Lets see.

Nope, RB - a solid runner in Glen Coffee out of Alabama. A good complement to Frank Gore.

No big names in back to back Jack

Jacksonville traded up to get the #9 pick in the third to follow their #8. For their trouble, Jacksonville went for the little-known due of Terrance Knighton of Temple and Derek Cox, the CB from WIlliam and Mary. Two distinct needs for Jacksonville covered, but the fans love names. I was hoping for DJ Moore or Derrick Williams.

Ho Hum Raiders

Matt Shaughnessy the DE from Wisconsin was the Raiders attempt to recover from the debacle of yesterday. No sparks. But at least we have heard of him!

Be Very Afraid...

Al Davis and Oakland are on the clock!

Defenders in Dallas and Cincy

A relatively unknown player - Jason Williams of Western Illinois opens the account for Jerry Jones and the Cowboys. His workout must have been pretty impressive.

Cincinatti could have a steal if Michael Johnson can reach his potential. The Georgia Tech DE is a superb athlete who could grow into a Julius Peppers type player with more time in the weight room.

Big Guys are the Big Business

You have to have the big guys and with Chicago adding Jarron Gilbert, they have emphasised it, despite glaring WR and OL needs.

Time for the Cowboys first pick of the draft. How about a CB here?

Bears about to get first taste

The Bears were spectators yesterday and with the 4th pick in the 3rd Round have plenty of options. OL is a need, WR is a huge need too. How about Derrick Williams of Penn State?

By the way, KC just added more bulk with Purdue DT Alex Magee.

CB for St Louis

Bradley Fletcher the CB from Iowa made it a Hawkeye opening to the second day as the Rams address a secondary need.

How about a prediction of a TE here for KC? Or Michael Johnson as an edge rusher?

Thick and Fast

The picks will be coming, so apologies for any delayed reporting.

Day 2 Lift-Off

The New York Jets are first up and keen to build on the Sanchez selection. And what a great way to get started with a nice running back - Shonn Greene who should complement Thomas Jones nicely. The Iowa RB was the Doak Walker winner last year after a standout senior season.

Is it just me, or does seem like we never left Radio City?

Prisco's Draft Grading

I just don't get it. Pete Prisco has compiled his first round pick grades and it is nonsense. I just don't know what his criteria are. At pick #2 he devalues the Rams for picking Jason Smith over Eugene Monroe who he thinks should have been selected, giving the Rams a B. Grading Jacksonville, he gave them a B as well even though at pick #8 they got the player he suggested should have been pick #2 and acknowledged the Jags needs on OL. If you need a position and you get, 6 picks later than you believe , the best player at the position, shouldn't that be an A?

But hey, Prisco was the one person, apart from Al Davis, who thought the Heyward-Bey selection was good, so, how much weight can you put in his thoughts.

Day 2 for the Jags

As a Jacksonville fan, who would I like to see added to the strong first day of solidifying the OL.

How about Shonn Green or Javon Ringer to complement MoJo.

Lets look at Derrick Williams the WR from Penn State.

A developmental QB like Tom Brandstater (Fresno) later in the day would be perfect.

If DJ Moore is available in Round 3, lets go get him. Maybe Rashad Johnson to solidify the safety spot.

DT is still a need, how about Jarron Gilbert. He is the only DT of note remaining, although a meeting of former Mich. standout Terrance Taylor wouldn't upset me.

Naturally, we would need about 7 3rd rounders to make this happen, but hey, maybe we get one of them!

Teams that Fared Worst on Day 1

None were worse than Oakland. At least the Raiders should be able to get Al Davis committed as officially insane and get rid of him.

- Oakland: They reach big time for Heyward-Bey and quite possible submit the wrong name with Michael Mitchell in Round 2. I bet Mitchell wasn't even thinking about the draft. There will be a movie or book about him soon - Accidentally Drafted.

- Cleveland: Early on the day I thought they would be the big winners with their trade. But to end up with a centre at 21 was a disappointment. Other picks a resolid, but no big playmaker like they could have had at #5.

- Denver: They got some good players. I love Moreno and Ayers and think they are outstanding, but the decision to trade away next year's #1 was a joke and devalued their good picks

Which Teams Fared Best on Day 1

Here are 4 teams I think really helped themselves and didn't give up the world for it.

Seattle - With the best player (Aaron Curry) in the draft, and a new starter in OL Max Unger, the Seahawks have improved their team greatly by holding their spot and moving back in the second.

Philadelphia - The Eagles went on the offensive and got two playmakers - WR Jeremy Maclin from Missouri and RB LeSean McCoy from Pittsburgh. Sure they gave up a 6th to climb two spots to get Maclin, but the Eagles addressed their needs and got great value.

New York Giants - Three picks and 3 playmakers who fit a need. Hakeem Nicks is great value and a much-needed offensive addition. Clint Sintim will compete to start at LB and William Beatty is the left tackle of the future.

New England - They traded back and back and back before getting first-round talent Darius Butler in the second, standout Oregon safety Patrick Chung, nose tackle Ron Brace in the second along with good solid pass protector Sebastian Vollmer from Houston late in Round 2. Most teams would have pulled the trigger at #23 in the first round on Butler, so their gameplan was solid.

Bears and Cowboys...snooze through the day

Neither made a selection and for one of those teams, it hurts.

The Cowboys have good pieces in place, but the Bears need plenty of help. Maybe we can consider Jay Cutler the Bears draft choice, so in that case, they went ok, but to not have any picks to land some WR help or some CB options is hard to swallow.

TE Dearth

No not death, but dearth.

The Broncos finished the day with a TE that they had targeted, in fact ESPN's John Clayton suggested it could be a TE, but not the one we predicted. I thought Cornelius Ingram, Shawn Nelson or Jared Cook could be taken, but instead Denver went for Richard Quinn of North Carolina.

Round 3 will be a huge one for TEs I think, teams wanting them will have to get them early.

Denver trade up again

The final pick of the day belongs now to Denver, who traded up with Pittsburgh. Lets hope they didn't give up their 2011 first rounder!

Titans Position Pick Predictable

They needed DL help, so the Titans choosing Sen'Derrick Marks of Auburn was not a big surprise. I thought we could see DE Michael Johnson of GATech come off the board here, but Marks will be trying to help replace Albert Haynesworth who fled for DC.

Huskies Have 3 Gone on Day 1

Connecticut has long been a college powerhouse... in Basketball. But now, with 3 NFL draftees in the first two rounds, Connecticut Huskies are bringing their program to national attention. William Beatty, the Offensive tackle, is the third to come from the Northeast school, following on from Donald Brown (Indy) and Darius Butler (New England). Beatty goes to bring some youth to the outstanding Giants offensive line in another nice bit of drafting by the G-Men.

** Postscript...The Huskies made it four with the selection of Cody Brown by Arizona with the second last pick of the day.

Dolphin DB Double

Miami added their second CB of the draft by taking Sean Smith from Utah in the second. Smith is the tallest CB in the NFL and a great athlete. As a late-bloomer, Smith has still scope to improve and Miami is set at corner for the immediate future.

Did I mention the pace of this draft?

Not the speed of the players, but the really good flowing pace of the selection process. My most enjoyable draft to date, although a challenge for the blogger to keep up!

Kruger to Replace Johnson

Paul Kruger didn't lose last season at Utah and he will be keen to keep that trend as the newest member of the Baltimore Ravens. Kruger should be an upgrade over 'try-hard' Jarret Johnson and give the Ravens plenty of scheme flexibility. Kruger is an athlete and possesses among the biggest motors in the draft. The Ravens continue to be stout drafters.

Colts Finally Address Need at DT

Indianapolis haven't had a dominant defensive tackle for some time. Many thought Round 1 would see them finally address the need. Nope. Instead it is Round 2 when the Colts tag Fili Moala from USC as their man. Moala is an athlete with a huge frame who will become an instant part of the rotation.

Underrated and Overrated Players find home in Round 2

William Moore, the safety from Missouri was one of the most-underrated players entering the draft. He also played an undervalued position - safety. So it was no surprise to many that the mid-second round was his home. But the reality is, the Atlanta Falcons may have hit a home-run with a player that should compete to start immediately.

Phil Loadholt, the offensive tackle from Oklahoma, was touted entering his senior year as a top ten pick. He underperformed that during the season, albeit performing ok, and has looked a bit like a weight-risk at recent workouts. So when Minnesota grabbed him mid-second, they got the potential of a first rounder, without the huge cost. We will see how it pans out.

Eagles Offense Flying

With Maclin in the first-round already going to the Eagles, LeSean McCoy, RB from Pitt is added to the Philadelphia offense. McCoy can do all the things that Westbrook can and adds insurance and support to the backfield which has lost Correll Buckhalter. Eagles fans should be delighted with the Eagles finally addressing these needs.

Veikune the latest Hawaii DL to be drafted

David Veikune's outstanding senior season was overlooked in Hawaii's underperforming season. But quietly the pass rushing ace put up good numbers and flashed plenty for the pro scouts to like. Veikune joins Travis LaBoy and Ikaika Francis as recent DL prospects from the island state, Veikune going to Cleveland where he may also be asked to play standing up.

Converted TE earns a nice PayDay

He spent his intial seasons at Cincinatti as a TE, but Connor Barwin converted to DE for his senior season and lit it up. He racked up the sacks and tackles-for-loss in the Bearcats great season, and his 4.6 40 time and great workouts had tongues wagging at the combine. His upside his huge as a good athlete with high motor. The Houston Texans added him in the middle of the second round and have now put two nice defensive picks together.

OL Value in the Second

Seattle added Oregon OL Max Unger to their OL group and perhaps he will start elsewhere or see Chris Spencer shirt on the line with their good interior. Otherwise he is great value and depth for Seattle, particularl as they move to zone blocking.

The Bills further added help up front with the best guard prospect - Andy Levitre out of Oregon State. With centre and guard filled by rookies, some reshuffling could help Buffalo cover for the loss of Jason Peters and support QB Trent Edwards.

No Hoopla, but Giants hit with Sintim

Clint Sintim didn't get the press of the USC trio or Aaron Curry, but Virginia's Clin Sintim worked in a pro-style defense in College and should be a contender for a starting berth immediately in New York.

Browns add Wideouts, but keep Edwards

The second round for Cleveland has netted two strong WRs. Brian Robiskie could well turn out to be one of the best pros among the WR group and the Browns got him cheaply at the start of the second. Now, in coming back with one of their scored picks, the Browns get Georgia's Mohammad Massaquoi to add support for the Browns receivers. Disgruntled WR Braylon Edwards is still in Cleveland and with the 2nd round nearing conclusion, a draft-day trade appears unlikely.

Enter the lesser-known DBs

Oakland select Michael Mitchell from Ohio. Not Ohio State. Ohio. Who? Denver select Darcel McBath from Texas Tech. McBath made some good plays in a talented conference, but a second-rounder?

Brown Brings Passh Rush, and Peppers Insurance to Carolina

The Julius Peppers era in Carolina is on its last legs, and Carolina are building for the future with Everette Brown as their first pick of the draft. Browns has Peppers-like skills, but will he work out the same? Some teams had Brown graded mid first round, others second, here Carolina can't lose with this pick.

My Mock in Review

So there were some hits and misses, but here is the final toll:

- 5 correct selections
- 16 correct position choices.

In comparison, Mike Mayock got:
- 8 correct selections
- 11 correct position choices.

Not bad I think!

Two Tackles for Jax

After taking Eugene Monroe at #8, the Jags go back to the Offensive Line well with Eben Britton from Arizona. Britton was a borderline first-round guy, so the Jags have certainly gotten value. There were other needs, but the Jags stayed true to their draft philosophy of best available player.

And Bam...here comes Butler

Back to back for New England gets them one of the top corners with Darius Butler. Fits a need and excellent value here.

Patriots trade up!

After going down, the Patriots used their ample ammo to move up to give them back to back second round picks. How about Darius Butler, the CB and Everette Brown from FSU?

Before I could even post the above comments, along come the Pats with the pick of Ron Brace, DT, Boston College. BJ Raji's running mate is a good 3-4 nose fit for New England.

Interestingly, as owner of 2 consecutive picks, how do NE decide who to pick first, assuming they know which 2 players they like. Perhaps $$ comes into it.

Finally off the Board

Maualuga goes to Cincinatti in a great pickup for the Bengals. It was a long wait, but Marvin Lewis should be able to get the best out of him. What made him slide? It seems it was the concern was his 3 down capabilities. We'll see.

Denver gave up what?????

Denver, it is reported, in trading up for the Seattle second rounder (37th overall) to select Alphonso Smith, have given up their 2010 first rounder. That is ridiculous. The value of that pick could be anything. They would want to win the Superbowl now to reduce the value of what they gave up. Broncos staff must have really loved Smith.

Second Round Off to a flying start

Safeties to get things moving in the second with the two best safeties - Louis Delmas (Western Michigan) to Detroit and Patrick Chung (Oregon)to the Patriots who finally make a selection.

The Rams get a first-round talent in James Laurinitis from Ohio State, and then it is a follow-up Ohio State pick with WR Brian Robiskie to the Browns in a move sure to upset many teams who hoped to grab the underrated player in the second.

The Broncos further solidify their defense with the third corner off the board - Wake Forest's Alphonso Smith.

Still plenty of big names on the board.

Ziggy Gets in the Hood

I had a first round grade on Ziggy Hood, but I didn't consider him a 3-4 fit, I thought he was a one-gap guy, ideal for a 4-3. I was expecting OL or CB for the Steelers who surprised all with this selection. I know there were a few early second round picking teams keen for Hood to slide to them.

Cards go Beanie

Wells is off the board. Arizona got the RB they needed, even if it wasn't the player they had targeted. Wells is a top runner (even if it hurts me as a Michigan fan to say it) and will improve the Cards. Having Wells will enable the Cardinals to get more conventional with their running and open up Fitzgerald and Boldin even more.

What are the Cards thinking?

They were considering a RB, but perhaps Wells is not the type of RB they desired. Then again his value might be hard to ignore. What about Maualuga as a big machine in the middle for Arizona? Any of the next wave of CBs could be a chance - Darius Butler, Alphonso Smith etc.

WR Solidify in First Round

Tennessee selecting Kenny Britt of Rutgers has completed a 5 strong WR group in the first round. Last year there were none, this time there are five. The WR needy teams are many, but the success rate of WR in the first is not high. Did the Titans make a reach pick? Surely he is not in the same league as Hakeem Nicks who went one pick earlier.

Who is Falling?

Chris 'Beanie' Wells and Rey Maualuga were certainly viewed to be Top 20 picks. What about Everette Brown? Surely his explosiveness would be of value. It seems now, only 2nd round value. Certainly other players dropped to lower than expected, but these two are the standout absentees from the commissioners soundbites.

Nicks in Blue

The Giants needed a WR. They got one. He runs great routes, is fast enough and anyone who saw that catch against West Virginia in the Bowl season knows he has hands. No Braylon Edwards trade happening, no Anquan Boldin movement, so the Giants do their diligence and get their man.

Giants Tossing Up Between Wells and Nicks

That is my thought. Both are positions of need and probably represent the best balance of need and value. Although, Maualuga would be the thumper that the Giants might need. Whichever way they go, the crowd in NY will voice their opinion.

Bills Address OL Needs

The Bills needed Offensive line help, particularly after letting Jason Peters move on to Philly. Eric Wood, the Center out of Louisville was the pick, jumping Max Unger as the generally regarded #2 snapper. I thought maybe Eben Britton, the OT from Arizona would have been more likely.

Colts Surprise with Brown pick

I don't think anyone was thinking that the Colts were thinking RB at all. Brown is a perfect scheme fit for the Colts thouggh, with his running and hands out of the backfield, Brown and Addai offer a nice 1-2 punch. Especially with Addai having some injury concerns in his career. I was thinking DT all the way.

WRs Falling

Heyward-Bey, Crabtree, Maclin, Harvin. For many, these were the top 4 guys at WR. Already that means 4 more WR in the first-round than there was last year. But there were a couple more with first round grades still on the board. With the Giants still to come, Hakeem Nicks can start visualising himself in blue.

Packers Chase Matthews Agressively

They traded up to get him...Clay Matthews. A former walk-on with NFL lineage, Matthews is a great 3-4 OLB pick up. I had overlooked Matthews for Green Bay, thinking that no doubt New England would have taken him if available. Matthews fits and is value here, after many had him going in the top 20.

New England trades AGAIN

The Patriots already have a million draft picks, now they get more from Green Bay who move up from 41. Who do the Packers want? My thought is DArius Butler or Beanie Wells.

Tuna Goes for Defense

The Dolphins have needs at WR, but Parcells doesn't like to draft them high, so the super-athletic Vontae Davis is the choice. The Illinois Cb has top ten measurables, but is considered a risk. Being the brother of Vernon Davis, who hasn't worked out as hoped in SF, shouldn't be a factor, but, the word is, it is. Davis will improve the secondary which is full of over-achievers. Look for Miami to go WR in the second, in which there should be plenty of value.

Falcons Get A Big Guy

Peria Jerry is a strong player who Head Coach Mike Smith will love. Jerry, out of Ole Miss was the clear #2 DT behind Raji and he will help the interior along with Babinaux. The Dorsey trade talk must have been just that.

Oher Finally

The Baltimore Ravens have ended the wait for Michael Oher. I had him in the top 15, and now finally he is off the board. Baltimore haven't had anyone at LT to rival Jonathon Ogden, and Oher could clearly become that guy. WR was the talk after the trade, but you gotta get the big guys.

Patriots Stockpiling

Another trade down for the Patriots to give them even more picks. The Ravens have moved up, surely after spotting a player they covet. Is it a WR? How about Michael Oher (sorry to mention him again)?. The Patriots get a fifth rounder in return for moving back 4 places.

Why did they trade back? Clearly the players they have targeted are likely to be on the board at 26 - Clay Matthews, Rey Maualuga, Darius Butler etc.

Minnesota get their man

I have had Harvin going to the Vikings for a while and sure enough, in purple he will be next year. Harvin is a perfect for Minnesota. He is THE most explosive offensive player in the draft. Is he a WR or a RB? What about the off-field issues? Forget it, Harvin is the slot to end all slot WR. Think about what Wes Welker does in New England - now add more explosiveness. Size isn't an issue for Welker, so why even bring it up. Put him the Wildcat, motion him into the backfield, out of the backfield, give it to him on screens. Tarvaris Jackson is rapt.

Return of the Mack...to Cleveland

Cleveland finally pick, and they go for offensive protection, but with Center - Alex Mack. Hmm, seems like a big reach. I think they could have had Max Unger in the second. I have mentioned his name many times, but surely Michael Oher was better value or another position. Cleveland stole a million picks to move back from #5 to #21, but then go and spoil it by picking a center.

Cleveland are laughing

The Browns can go many different ways with their 21st pick and still get great value and a key player. Michael Oher, a WR, Beanie Wells. All would be great for Cleveland.

Detroit add help for Stafford...

...although not the help I was expecting. With Michael Oher on the board, I assumed they would go for him, or perhaps address defense with Maualuga. Pettigrew will help the run-blocking and offer Stafford a strong pass catching target. Atlanta was out of the mix for Pettigrew due to the Gonzalez trade, but Buffalo were hoping to see him fall to them.

You go away for 2 minutes....

And Cleveland trades down again.

Another 6th round pick for Cleveland as Philly swoop in to address their WR need with Jeremy Maclin. Maclin should be happy because Philadelphia will surround him with better players than Oakland would have. He might have lost some money, but a good career will take care of that over the long-haul.

Ayers best on the Board and best for Broncos

Robert Ayers was the best player yet to be drafted. His film against Alabama was outstanding and after an impressive Senior Bowl, Ayers fits in nicely in Denver. He probably was big and athletic enough to fit 3-4 and 4-3 scheme, so Denver can plug him in nicely. He is as good as Tyson Jackson in my view.

Predictions Ring True

Many had Freeman going to Tampa. Even I did before they signed Leftwich, but now the Bucs have take Freeman who has great skills and athleticism and sitting for a year of 2 to learn will be ideal for him. The Bucs have other needs, but the Raheem Morris reign starts with a QB.

Cleveland Options Not Hurt by Bucs Trade

Not only do they get more picks, but the Browns will still get their pick of players at #19. I don't see Denver eyeing the same guys that Cleveland coveted. Michael Oher to Cleveland still make sense.

Tampa Trades Up for Who?

Tampa Bay have traded up to the #17 pick. But for who? Do the Bucs want to go ahead of Denver for Josh Freeman? Do they want Maualuga? Maybe RObert Ayers? I think Ayers would be perfect.

Huge Surprise in San Diego

A great athlete and late-round prospect, but not sure that many guessed him coming to the Chargers. He will be a great pass-rusher, and with Merriman in the final year of his contract and the issues around Shaun Phillips, English does make sense. Many would have assumed they might have gone with an inside backer, but after the initial shock and disappointment, Chargers fans will likely be happy (not now, but in the future).

Cleveland Has Options

Michael Oher would be a standout selection for Cleveland if he doesn't end up in San Diego. This would allow the Browns to fill the need that possibly they would have filled at #5. Do Cleveland go WR with Maclin? How about Wells if he slides beyond the Chargers? Cleveland are the real winner in the trade with the Jets.

Ok, so I am getting in the zone now.

Cushing to the Texans. Many thought he might be gone by now, but he will be a player and a leader that the Texans can use to full effect.

San Diego could make it a USC LB back-to-back with Rey Maualuga, unless they really do want a big back complement to their current RB corps.

Houston Should Take Cushing

Cushing is the man for the inside of the defense. Early on I had Wells, but with Cushing falling here, it is a perfect fit. Assume here that they prefer Cushing tMatthews as I do.

Alright, sense prevails for the Saints

Their offense is the highest scoring in the NFL and it has always been the defense that has hurt them. Jenkins should make a difference. Will he play CB or Safety? Saints need help in both places, but I say keep him at CB. He was rarely shown up by speed guys in college, despite his 'slow' 4.5 time.

New Orleans

They need defense, but Sean Payton loves his offensive weapons. Will it be Beanie Wells? Just take Malcolm Jenkins already.

Quickets pick yet - Redskins get Orakpo

No doubt for the Redskins, when Orakpo (who I had in the top 5) was available. Pick him. A great pass-rusher to help Albert Haynesworth and take over for Jason Taylor.

Moreno - WOW

I rate Knowshon Moreno very highly, so this is a great pickup for Denver. After years of finding great RBs later in the draft, under new coach Josh McDaniels, Denver says "We need a bell-cow back" and they have one. All eyes were on defense, including me. Moreno should have an immediate impact.

Options for Denver

They need defense. They have great options. Brian Orakpo could be the DeMarcus Ware of Denver. Brian Cushing could be a star for the Broncos. But who do they want?

Trusting My INstincts ... which I should have done

I had Aaron Maybin goin #11 for the entire draft leadup, unil last night when I caved to the media talk about concerns of his size. I have learnt a valuable lesson.

Maybin provides am instant pass rush upgrade for the bills who can use rgeir #28 pick for other help.

Crabtree Wait Over

Relief for the Texas Tech WR as the 49ers take him at 10. The niners have been vraving a young legit WR and Crabtree can learn from Isaac Bruce. Question is, who is throwing the ball?

Familiar Faces

Eric Mangini won't have a first round player for this year in starting life with the Browns, but he will have 3 familar faces in camp - Kenyon Coleman, Abram Elam and Brett RAtliff. Who knows if they actually want to follow him?

Raji perfect for Green Bay

I had him going earlier, but the Packers are ecstatic that the big athlete from Boston College falls to be their ideal 3-4 DT. As soon as the Jags chose Monroe, we all knew that Raji was a Packer in the making. He is another example of the mesh of need and value.

Loving the pace of the Draft

With its new prime-time spot, fans have gotta love the increased pace of the draft. At 10minutes per pick and with plenty of discussion to fill the time, we are racing through the first. No doubt NFL execs are thinking differently, their windows for trades etc much shorter.

Crabtree watching his world collapse

Was it his injury? The lack of a 40 time? His prima-donna attitude? The fear in drafting a WR high? For whatever reason Michael Crabtree, the back to back Biletnikoff award winner is still on the board and appears now, destined to fall out of the top 10 (or will he??).

The 49ers have a need for a WR and Crabtree would give them some young firepower for sure. He is a player, no-doubt, but there is enough hesitation. If the Niners don't, expect Denver to consider it, but in reality Houston at 15 or Philadelphia at 21 could be falling points.

Value meets need = Monroe to Jax

Eugene Monroe was considered a top 5 pick. It was a miracle he lasted to number 8 and he made Jacksonville fans (the committed - not the flighty 'we want Crabtree' type) very happy.

Monroe will be given the chance to start at RT with Tra Thomas at LT for now, before Monroe can take over. Already, David Garrard is a better player. They can look for a WR in the second round.

How easy a mock can collapse

A trade here, a shock there and it all falls down.

Next up Jacksonville. As a big Jags fan, I am hoping for BJ Raji. Monroe would also fit a need, as would Crabtree. But a receiver can be had in Round 2. Draft the big guys I say!

At least we know the 49ers won't go QB in the first.

Nothing changes for the Pack at 9, except if Raji is available!

Raiders Reach for Speed

Wow. Heyward-Bey to Oakland. We all know that Al Davis loves his fast guys, but to choose Heyward-Bey here reminds me of the Minnesota Vikings selection of Troy Williamson in 2005. Both Minnesota and Jacksonville know how that worked out. The Maryland WR is fast but has inconsistent hands and surely belonged in the middle of the first. In fact, I think that he would have fallen at least 10 spots lower if the old-man didn't love his fast movers.

Jacksonville are licking their chops with their 3 most-coveted players and positions on the board - Raji, Monroe and Crabtree.

Crabtree is in agony in the green room!

Huge price for Sanchez

Just revealed by NFL.com is what the jets gave up for Sanchez:

The Jets paid a high price to move up. Going to the Browns are DE Kenyon Coleman, QB Brett Ratliff and DB Abram Elam, a first-round pick (17th overall) and a second-round pick (52nd).

Cleveland can still address their needs on defense, at WR and now get some other bit players. Ratliff will become a solid backup once the Browns choose which QB to trade.

Bengals Get Protection

Andre Smith is the second offensive tackle off the board at #6, drafted by the Bengals. There seemed some debate over whether to take Smith or Monroe, but Smith appears to have the greater upside and he was considered a prospect for the top pick until the combine and pro-day disasters.

It appears now that the Raiders and Jags have their pick of Raji, Monroe or Crabtree. All three fit the Jags needs, so whatever falls through Al Davis' cracks is there for the taking.

Some discussion has come up over Eugene Monroe's knees as to why he has slipped to third OT.

Sanchez a Jet!

They weren't willing to wait for him and knowing there was interest coming. The Jets now have their franchise QB, but the price will surely have been steep.

TRADE!!!!

The Jets did it, they roared into the Top 5 and no doubt will turn in the card for Mark Sanchez. We will see for sure in a second and I can't wait to see what sort of compensation they got. A great move for Cleveland too!

Curry to good to pass up

Well, it doesn't always happen that the best player is first taken, in this case, the best player goes #4 to Seattle. Aaron Curry is a great selection for Seattle who get a top player, a clean character and an instant replacement for Julian Petersen. This will be as successful as Patrick Willis was for San Francisco. Seattle now has the best young LB corps in the NFL with Tatupu, Hill and Curry.

I knew the Sanchez talk was just that - talk.

Browns have plenty of options here. Perhaps now is the time for same trade talk about Braylong Edwards. Look for Andre Smith or Eugene Monroe to come off the board.

Jackson it is

After being considered a teens pick for most of the leadup, the last week saw Tyson Jackson climb the draft boards considerably, especially once word got out that the Chiefs were interested at #3. How interested? Interested enough to draft him, which they have. Jackson is the perfect 3-4 end for the Chiefs and after watching film of him in the Chick-fil-a-bowl and in the the loss to Arkansas, Jackson was outstanding and now truly made good his decision to stay for his senior year. This is, however, possibly the highest pick for a 3-4 defensive lineman in some years.

Seattle are next and with Curry on the board it should be an easy pick, or is that Sanchez talk more than fluff?

My Mock thinkings

I guess I need to preface my mock draft to suggest that I have chosen players I would choose in the positions teams are drafting, rather than what I think will happen. Most had heard the Rams were higher on Smith than Monroe, but I still think Monroe will be better. Maybe next year I will do two types of mock.

KC Will go Defense

Tyson Jackson, Aaron Curry or Brian Orakpo are the candidates for the 3-4. I think that Curry isn't the ideal 3-4 linebacker, but both Jackson, who is climbing boards and Orakpo who would be a sensational edge rusher, would be big hits in KC.

Rams Take their Time, Draft Jason Smith

The Rams used their full allotment of time which leads me to believe they were managing calls for trades, otherwise, with all night and day to consider their pick knowing Stafford was taken, they would have known who they were taking - Jason Smith.

It was the pick that was predicted by many in the past few weeks, but a real surprise given his post season ratings. Nobody had Jason Smith as a top ten guy after the season. Sure, Baylor didn't have a season worthy of National attention, but this was a huge climb for Smith. An athletic tackle with a good attitude, Smith will help the Rams in trying to replace Orlando Pace. I still believe that Monroe will be better, but could see this selection by the Rams was on the cards.

It's in the books - Stafford 1

As expected the Lions were quick to turn in the card and Stafford got his day in the sun with the Commissioner, mixed responses (insert sarcasm here) from the Radio City Music Hall crowd, although wait till the Jets pick for some real reaction. Next up are the Rams who will go Offensive Tackle. Question is, will it be Smith, Smith or Monroe?

Dorsey Trade??

That is a possibility that ESPN.com is reporting. Last year's #5 Overall pick Glenn Dorsey could be traded - potentially to Atlanta - is what is being heard. It would be almost unheard of for such a trade, but the switch from 4-3 to 3-4 that the Chiefs are undergoing is the catalyst, with Dorsey purely a 4-3 tackle. If Atlanta could pull it off for a good price, it would be very interesting. Last year the Falcons were considered to be strongly considering Dorsey along with Matt Ryan,

NFL.com Live Feed

Surely the NFL new that the demand for their online feed would be huge. Seeing the message - "Due to overwhelming demand at the moment for this service...you have been placed in a virtual waiting room" - was kind of predictable, but undoubtedly frustrating. After all, it is only the wealthy sports organisation in the world.

Let's get it started

We know how it is going to start, but lets see how it all shapes up.

Things I am looking for:
- Big trades to shake it all up
- Teams reaching for need rather than value

Stafford Signs, Draft begins

"With the first selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select Matthew Stafford, Quarterback, University of Georgia". No excuses for the Commish getting it wrong now!

Ok, so maybe the draft hasn't officially begun, but all the suspense of the #1 pick is over after the Detroit Lions and Matt Stafford have agreed to terms on a fat rookie contract. Stafford was #1 on most pundits mock drafts and now it is done.

The Stafford selection is no surprise. Once the Cutler to the Bears deal was sealed, it was clear that Stafford would end up in Detroit. Despite the preliminary negotiations with Jason Smith and Aaron Curry, it was always Stafford. Owning the 20th pick in the draft, Detroit can tomorrow cap a great first round with an offensive tackle or linebacker.

Detroit will go through the official lodgement of selection card tomorrow in New York, but rest assured. the Rams will be busy negotiating with their prime target as we speak.

How does this early announcement impact the draft? Well for a start the NFL network will have some early analysis to talk through, but the suspense is lost. I am surprised that the NFL hasn't yet passed a rule dictating that any pre-draft deals be kept secret so as to ensure the integrity of the draft as a commercial property.

An offensive lineman is headed to St Louis. Monroe or Smith, no question. The Rams talk a good game in thinking they could bluff someone into trading with them by buying a plane ticket for Sanchez to STL. But we're not fooled.

St Louis is on the clock.

A Really Final Round 1 Mock

1. Detroit – Matthew Stafford, QB, UGA

I don't know if he is the best player, but a team coming from the bottom up needs someone to become the face, even if Culpepper is the man to start this season. Not getting Cutler guarantees this pick. If they were guaranteed to get the #1 pick next year I would take Curry now and Bradford next year, but… Having gone back to watch his film, he has all the tools.

2. St Louis – Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia

LB is a need still, but the replacement for Orlando Pace is here. Some like Smith more, but he is a late riser and the tape may not be as strong for Smith as for Monroe.

3. Kansas City – Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas

The Chiefs need some playmakers on defense and Orakpo is a specimen. Some pundits have Curry going here, but I don't see him fitting the bill for KC. Orakpo is a speed rusher and the Chiefs desperately need some sacks. Curry is a chance here as well, but I still see DE is more of a need.

4. Seattle - Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest

Offensive tackle is the talk, but with Peterson gone and Leroy Hill having off-field issues, the Seahawks can setup an impressive young LB group. Late mail has the Squaks interested in Sanchez, but is that a smokescreen??

5. Cleveland Browns – Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

The Browns take the best player on the board and fill a need with the athletic OT.

6. Cincinnati – Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech

The best WR will immediately fill Housh’s spot opposite Ocho Cinco.

7. Oakland – BJ Raji, DT, Boston College

The WR debate is on, but perhaps history shows Al Davis drafts big guys. They signed Khalif Barnes to handle the OL, now they take the DT to fill the gaping holes up front.

8. Jacksonville – Andre Smith, OT, Alabama

The Jags will have seen some good things about his Pro Day and likely schedule him for a private workout. BJ Raji is still a chance, but the Jags front office are now stating a clear desire to still draft O Line even with Tra Thomas. What is with the Mark Sanchez talk. No chance I say. If Crabtree is on the board they take him.

9. Green Bay – Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU

The ideal player for the 3-4 system they are installing. Was outstanding in the Peach Bowl.

10. San Francisco – Mark Sanchez, QB, USC

His Pro Day helped is stock and the Niners can't possibly think that Hill or Smith is still the answer.

11. Buffalo – Michael Oher, OL, Ole Miss

The run on quality tackles has left the Bills looking at Oher or a defensive pick. Oher's stock is rising and the loss of Peters makes this a need pick.

12. Denver Broncos – Brian Cushing, LB, USC

Maybe they move up to get Sanchez. Maybe they see him fall into their laps. Otherwise they need someone for the 3-4 and Cushing works.

13. Washington – Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee

With Haynesworth on the inside and Jason Taylor gone, here is a fine pass rusher to spark the Redskins. Watching him against Alabama he was a beast.

14. New Orleans Saints – Malcolm Jenkins, DB, Ohio State

Is he a CB or Safety? Who cares, the Saints need both and Jenkins is a great player.

15. Houston - Beanie Wells, RB, Ohio State

Back to Back buckeyes. The first RB taken is Wells who fits the zone scheme in Houston better than Moreno and is a great complement to Slaton.

16. San Diego – Rey Maualuga, LB, USC

An inside backer is needed for the 3-4 and the USC monster is a perfect fit inside.

17. New York Jets – Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri

Maclin has deep speed and is a dynamic playmaker. He will give whoever the Jets QB is a field stretching target. Do they stretch for Freeman here? My thought is no, but if Sanchez was around... Ultimately, they should have taken Henne last year.

18. Denver (from Chicago) – Everette Brown, OLB/DE, FSU

More defensive help please, and this athlete should become a pass-rush demon.

19. Tampa Bay – Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss

Unless Sanchez falls, I think the Leftwich signing points to another position of need and the interior of the DL needs help.

20. Detroit – Eben Britton, OT, Arizona

Time to give Stafford some more protection. Britton is the fifth OT taken this round.

21. Philadelphia – Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia

Westbrook needs a running mate and with Buckhalter gone, Moreno fits the bill. The Eagles become even more dangerous now.

22. Minnesota – Percy Harvin, WR, Florida

Minnesota wet their pants at getting Harvin in to complement Berrian and Rice. With Harvin in the slot, Adrian Peterson becomes more of a weapon. His off-field concerns mean that some teams might drop him from their board.

23. New England – Clay Matthews, LB, USC

Matthews is a good fit for the 3-4 and is a Belichick type of player, a possible replacement instantly for Vrabel. Perhaps they look at Larry English as well.

24. Atlanta – Vontae Davis, SB, Illinois

A top corner is needed in Atlanta to help them support the stronger offense. Brandon Pettigrew (OKSt TE) would be an intriguing pickup to help Matt Ryan.

25. Miami – Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut

Value here by the truckload to improve the team on D. Alphonso Smith could also have a chance here.

26. Baltimore Ravens – James Laurinitis, LB, Ohio State

A CB is a good chance here, but how about a LB to learn from Ray. Plus, he was a top 15 pick a year ago and now probably unlucky to fall to this spot, but lucky for the Ravens.

27. Indianapolis – Ziggy Hood, DT, Missouri

The Colts need to fix their inside run defense and the big guy from the TIgers is the man. A WR like Nicks would be a strong possibility also.

28. Buffalo – Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State

They end up getting a guy they had targeted higher at this spot due to concerns about his strength and run play. Here at this spot they can let him be a pass-rushing menace.

29. New York Giants – Darius Hayward-Bey, WR, Maryland

We saw how they struggled without Plaxico, so now they need a big athletic target along with their little hands guys and Hayward-Bey is the deep threat.

30. Tennessee – Hakeem Nicks, WR, UNC

The value here is too good to pass up as the Titans need a dependable guy.

31. Arizona – Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut

The Cards need someone to run with Hightower, so Brown offers versatility in the run game and catching passes.

32. Pittsburgh – Alex Mack, OL, California

If the top CBs are off the board, this is a sure need for the Steelers to boost their OL.

Draft Day Blogathon

3PS is with you all through the first day of the draft with pick by pick analysis, forecasts and all the trade and movement of the day.

Draft Trades to get Sanchez in Denver

So, if McDaniels is in love with Sanchez, how can the Broncos make it happen?

1) Teams ahead with potential interest
Assuming the Lions take Stafford, there are only a handful of teams ahead of the Broncos that might be interested. Seattle are looking for their future QB, although could wait another year. I honestly believe that St Louis has to consider a QB to take over for Bulger. Some have suggested that Jacksonville is the likely drafter of Sanzhez, but I don't buy that. The 49ers are certainly a team that should take Sanchez if he is there.

2) What will it take?
Denver would have to give up both first rounders to get anywhere near the top 5. To get infront of the Jags, they will probably need their 12 pick and a second rounder. To get in front of the niners, probably only a swap and a third. The Broncos will have to hold out hope that the Bucs or Jets don't get too excited to climb up after Sanchez too.

3) The ideal setup?
Denver pulls the trigger with Jacksonville. Jacksonville get an extra pick, and can probably still take one of their preferred players - Andre Smith, BJ Raji or maybe a WR.

DRAFT DAY FALLOUT OF THE CUTLER TRADE

1) Denver with two picks in the top 20 now has some firepower to get some help on defense. A top LB (one of the 3 USC players) must be on the agenda for one of the picks, with perhaps DL help at the other if they don’t look to go for a QB. If Sanchez sits on the board at their 12 slot, it will be mighty tempting.

2) QB needy teams such as Tampa, the Jets and the Lions must now address the position in the draft. We can assume that the Lions will draft Stafford for sure now. The Jets were hot on Cutler’s tail but didn’t get it done. Will they sit and wait for Sanchez to drop, or will they go up to grab him. Tampa will either need to ‘settle’ for Josh Freeman, or package up some picks to move up for Sanchez. No way he slides that far. What about the Cleveland Browns? They have 2 starting caliber guys. What sort of return could they get for one of them. How about a shock trade sending Anderson to Detroit for a swap of first round picks (1 and 5) and a 3rd rounder. Detroit gets a QB and can use the fifth on help like Aaron Curry or one of the top OL as well as their other first. Cleveland get a chance to secure the best OL or Aaron Curry plus the 3rd as a sweetener.

3) The first round WR market has now opened up with Chicago out of the picture. Look for some teams picking in the 20s to be excited to get a shot at one of the top WR that might have previously been off the board. Minnesota would be excited at the chance that Percy Harvin might be a shot for them now.

Big Trade = Big Expectations

1) Cutler gets his wish

He wanted out and now he has it, all the way to the Windy City. In Chicago he finds himself with a good start-a-fresh opportunity, but a less talented offensive supporting group. In Denver Cutler had Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal. In Chicago he has Devin Hester and Greg Olson. Not exactly the same firepower. He does have the ground game and reliable hands of Matt Forte for support. But what about his protection?

2) Steep Price

Hearing about 2 first-rounders as the asking price, you have to think that is such a huge move. Throw in a QB and a third rounder and you have some serious firepower thrown at the deal. The Bears have finally got a legit QB (no offence to Orton), but did they give up too much? Can they address the rest of their needs? The reality is now that not having to pay a first round pick perhaps frees up some cash for Free agency. Some of this will need to be on Orlando Pace for the line, but a veteran WR such as Torry Holt and a veteran QB – perhaps Leftwich, maybe Garcia – should be on the shopping list to help Cutler out.

3) Who at QB for Denver?

Was Kyle Orton much of a sweetener? Do they believe he is a legitimate shot to battle Chris Simms for a starting job? Orton must have felt good knowing that in Chicago he would finally be the number 1 guy, but now is in a competition. Are either Simms or Orton the guy? Does Denver consider Sanchez at 12 if he is available? Do they like him enough to move up in front of San Francisco? Is Orton a McDaniels system guy? No doubt he is bright and slung it around at Purdue, so perhaps he is. We shall see.

New Mock Update - post Cutler trade

1. Detroit – Matthew Stafford, QB, UGA

I think Curry is a better player, but a team coming from the bottom up needs someone to become the face, even if Culpepper is the man to start this season. Not getting Cutler guarantees this pick. If they were guaranteed to get the #1 pick next year I would take Curry now and Bradford next year, but…

2. St Louis – Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia

4. Seattle - Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest

Offensive tackle is the talk, but with Peterson gone and Leroy Hill having off-field issues, the Seahawks can setup an impressive young LB group.

5. Cleveland Browns – Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

The Browns take the best player on the board and fill a need with the athletic OT.

17. New York Jets – Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri

Maclin has deep speed and is a dynamic playmaker. He will give whoever the Jets QB is a field stretching target.

18. Denver (from Chicago) – Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU

The need someone to be a thumper in the middle that they have been lacking and Mauluga should offer that instantly.

19. Tampa Bay – Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State

Tampa could be tempted to trade up to secure Sanchez if he gets past the 49ers, or perhaps could be out of the market with a Cutler deal, but otherwise, QB is still the need.

20. Detroit – Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi

Time to give Stafford some more protection. Oher getting to Detroit is a lucky catch for the Lions.

21. Philadelphia – Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia

Westbrook needs a running mate and with Buckhalter gone, Moreno fits the bill. The Eagles become even more dangerous now.

A WR could be a choice here, but they need OL help and Britton has the goods.

Worst Free Agency Moves

1) Chicago Bears Being Inactive

They need help, so why hope for it. With receivers out there, and the potential for trades to get a QB, they have to be proactive. If they can get into the Cutler sweepstakes, they could fall of this list.

2) TO to Buffalo

At the time I thought it was a good thing. If he would only just go in and play football. How stupid am I for thinking he could do that. If he did, Buffalo get an added dimension. Now it seems they get a distraction.

3) Deric Ward to Tampa

He didn't really break the bank in Tampa, and he has ended up in a similar situation as he had in NY. The Giants gave up easily on a thousand yard back to trust the big talented, but often injured Brandon Jacobs. I don't know why.
